Why Wood-Fired Pizza?

Wood-fired pizza is one of my favourite styles, and I think the biggest reason is flavour. Compared to gas or electric ovens, a wood-fired oven gives pizza a more natural and slightly smoky taste that I personally notice straight away.

The texture is the other reason. Because a wood-fired oven reaches a very high temperature, the pizza cooks quickly. When done well, the edges become crisp while the middle stays soft without turning too wet or heavy.

This matters especially when a pizza has a lot of toppings. I am usually not a fan of heavily loaded pizzas because they can turn soggy. But in a good wood-fired oven, the toppings tend to cook better, and the dough still holds everything together.

For me, a good wood-fired pizza in Melbourne's north should have:

  • a flavourful, well-fermented dough
  • crisp edges without being burnt
  • good-quality toppings, used with some restraint
  • a balanced amount of cheese and sauce
  • a base that holds together while eating

How I Choose the Places in This Guide

I only add places I have personally visited and genuinely liked. This is not a list copied from Google or TripAdvisor. If I have not eaten there myself, it does not go in.

When I visit a pizza place, I pay attention to:

  • the taste and texture of the pizza
  • the quality of the ingredients
  • the atmosphere and service
  • whether I would recommend it to someone else
  • whether the place feels worth returning to

At the moment, this guide covers two wood-fired pizza places in Melbourne's north: Pizzicotto Pizzeria in Strathmore and Cucina 3064 in Mickleham. As I try more spots, I will add them here.

Pizzicotto Pizzeria โ€” Strathmore

If you are looking for wood-fired pizza in Strathmore or the surrounding northern suburbs, Pizzicotto Pizzeria is one of the first places I would recommend.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the smell coming from the wood-fired oven. It immediately made the place feel warm and inviting. The atmosphere is lively, casual, and family-friendly.

I am not usually someone who reaches for heavily topped pizzas, but the eggplant pizza at Pizzicotto genuinely surprised me. The flavour was excellent. My only small note is that the eggplant slices could perhaps be cut a little thinner, but overall it was one of the most memorable pizzas I have tried in Melbourne's north recently.

Best for: local wood-fired pizza dinner, family meals, casual evenings

Location: Strathmore, Melbourne's north

Booking tip: Recommended, especially on weekends. Can get noisy when busy.

Cucina 3064 โ€” Mickleham

Cucina 3064 offers a noticeably different experience from Pizzicotto. Located at Marnong Estate in Mickleham, the setting is spacious and scenic. This is not a quick local pizza dinner. It feels more like a place you would choose for a relaxed lunch, a special occasion, or a proper weekend outing.

One of the standout things about Cucina 3064 is the atmosphere. The vineyard setting adds a different dimension to the whole meal. If you are going with family or a group of friends, the wider menu is also a practical advantage.

The pizza itself fits well with the setting. A well-made classic pizza like a Margherita works really nicely here because the overall experience is part of what you are paying for.

Best for: special occasions, vineyard dining, relaxed group meals

Location: Mickleham (Marnong Estate), Melbourne's outer north

Booking tip: Recommended, especially for weekends. Parking was not an issue during my visit.

Pizzicotto or Cucina 3064: Which One Should You Choose?

These two places are not really in direct competition. They offer genuinely different experiences. As this guide grows with more wood-fired pizza spots in Melbourne's north, this comparison will naturally evolve too.

If you want...I would choose...

A more scenic or special occasion mealCucina 3064
A place around Mickleham or CraigieburnCucina 3064
Classic Italian restaurant atmospherePizzicotto Pizzeria
A vineyard-style dining experienceCucina 3064

Both places are family-friendly, though Pizzicotto can feel noticeably louder when it is busy. I had no parking issues at either place during my visits.
